Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
My name is Nick A. Kolev, I am Bulgarian-American living in Los Angeles and Orange Counties for the last 20 years. I obtained my Science Degree from the University of Leningrad / Soviet Union in 1989 and I came to Los Angeles from Belgium as a political refugee. I am fluent in English, Bulgarian, Russian and French and the USA is the 5th country where I have been living. I am an active KPFK listener after 9/11, 2001.

Since 1998, I am involved in human rights issues / church ministry in state prisons to help innocent in their Habeas Corpus writs, in successful changing the outcome and investigating the murder of U.S. Marine from Russian origin in the base in Okinawa, Japan. I have 3 civil rights cases which I moved Pro Bono, as a people's advocate from local state and federal courts to U.S. Supreme Court.

I have unique experience living for 11 years as a foreign student / researcher in the Soviet Union and 20 years in the U.S. as a refugee and citizen. Comparing the two places, I found striking similarities in manipulation and abuse, in propaganda deceit, in militarism and preparation of new imperial wars.

My vision for KPFK is to be not just another opposition station, but the people's voice with larger participation of volunteers, less academic, less standard planning and more flexibility in breaking news cover, courageous confrontation of corporate media, demand for personal responsibility of politicians and public figures, more community actions sponsored and organized by KPFK.

I envision the following goals and priorities for the station:
--Striving and working to prevent the growth of US Militarism and to stop another imperial war in Central Asia;
--Rising constantly the question of personal rights and privacy by working to reverse the existing trend of massive spying and monitoring of U.S. citizens combined with Government secrecy and terrorist paranoia:
KPFK demanding regularly more privacy for citizens and more transparency for Government executive branch;
--Covering miscarriages of justice and law enforcement abuses regarding minorities, special protection groups, political activists, homeless, stronger voicing of volunteer work, pro bono advocacy.
--Better cooperation and mutual incentives with other non-conformist media groups, publishers, activists.

If elected for the Local Station board, I would not spare time, energy and experience in achieving these goals as a team effort, as a common goal.

Thank You for the opportunity to run as a candidate for Local Station Board.

Sincerely,
Nick A. Kolev
