My name is Laura Prives, and I am a staff candidate for KPFA’s Local Station Board. I have been on the paid staff at KPFA since 2006 as Associate Producer and interim Executive Producer of the Morning Show. I went through the News training program in 2003, volunteered in the newsroom and served on the Program Council before becoming part of the paid staff. I am deeply enmeshed in the day-to-day operations of the station and have carried a great deal of responsibility in working to make the quarterly fund drives successful. KPFA's mission to be an outlet promoting cultural diversity, community expression, understanding between people and to serve as a forum for various viewpoints is crucial to me. That's why I've put my heart and soul into my work for this institution. I believe in it. I believe social change is possible through education, information and bringing to light the complexity of human situation. Lewis Hill has proved to be visionary. Now sixty years into the model he created, KPFA and Pacifica face enormous challenges within a landscape of political, economic, cultural and environmental crisis. As a member of the board I hope to help steer KPFA towards becoming a more effective and significant alternative media outlet. I hope to effect policy to help broaden our listener base. I hope to look for innovative ways to increase our non-corporate means of financial support. I hope to work towards consensus building, transparency and skillful board governance. I have been nominated by Lewis Sawyer, Deverol Ross, Bonnie Simmons, Luis Medina and Philip Maldari. |
