Prev David Gans
Staff Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
Statement
My name is David Gans. I have been a KPFA program host since 1990. My music show is called Dead to the World, and it airs Wednesdays from 8 to 10pm. I have been a professional broadcaster for nearly 25 years. I have been committed to progressive causes for my entire adult life; I have a particular interest in food safety and sustainability issues. I have served on several nonprofit boards (the Ashkenaz, Pickle Family Circus, and the Unbroken Chain Foundation), and I have significant experience in community self-governance missions, so I think I can bring some valuable skills to the LSB. I am also a businessman; I run my own radio network. I am a member of the Association of Independents in Radio, NARAS, the Folk Alliance, and the American Federation of Musicians. Although I am a music programmer, my intention would be to represent the entire staff, not just the music department.

I am a strong believer in the mission of KPFA and Pacifica, and I strongly believe that citizens must participate in civic life and governance. As a committed member of this community, I think it's time for me to come off the sidelines and get involved.

In addition to my broadcasting and nonprofit experience, I have hosted online forums for more than 20 years, and I have years of experience in using social networks to develop programs and communities. We have the power to describe the world as we see it and an obligation to propagate our vision. I think KPFA and Pacifica need to take full advantage of developments in online technology in order to transmit our messages far and wide, making use of emerging social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to promote our programming and communicate with the communities we serve.

I see KPFA as a collection of communities working together to further our joint and several missions. The LSB's job is to facilitate and support this mission; we do this by listening, understanding, sympathizing, deciding, and assisting.
