Listener Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
Statement
Dear Friends and Neighbors, I call for a new way forward for KPFA, I propose 3 areas where we can open our interactions to forward thinking with vision and the goal of working together, listeners and staff, to create the best possible radio at KPFA.

1) Personal process and Collective behavior:
-Let us agree to stop blaming others for problems, and focus on issues, not on personalities.
-Let us agree to stop re-telling old stories from the KPFA struggles, which drag us down and back into the past.
-Let us focus on visions for now, and the future.
-Let us look for and find common ground whenever a suggestion is presented.
-Let us be inclusive, not exclusive when dealing with all KPFA members and staff.
2) LSB Meeting process:
-We can agree to dialogue on issues of concern.
-We can replace Robts. Rules of Order with a new system with space for
generous discussion of topics of concern, leading to a concensus for moving forward.
3) Working together:
-We can reactivate the committees where real work and good dialogue can occur in a more intimate setting, offering an opportunity to bring listeners into the dialogue.
-We can reinvent the program council - the original pulsing heart of the station where all members; staff, management, volunteers and listeners joined in the review of programing and making strategy for forward progress.
-We can create Cafe KPFA: I propose to spearhead a project to upgrade and remodel the old Pacifia owned cafe on the corner which has been derilect for 10 years to become a place to sit and talk and eat and drink, while deeply discussing our concerns.I believe a combination of capital fund generation and skilled construction teams working with volunteers could create a dynamic opportunity for members of the KPFA family to connect and generate income for the station.

I urge you to select representatives that are willing to be inclusive, including individuals with diverse and personal opinions. The current effort of exclusion creates a ongoing backlash and attracts people who just want to fight.

The benefit of using single transferable vote is to ensure broad and diverse representation on the board, and it has been compromised by the formation of blocks of candidates running together as a slate who then vote by following the leader rather than bringing to the discussion, unique and individual concerns. I therefore urge listeners to vote for people willing to think for themselves and vote as individuals.

I was elected to the LSB in the very first historical Democratic election in 2003 and participated in the excitment of a new way forward with a re-election in 2004.

I bring Institutional memory to this dialogue which began in 1949 when I sang children's folk songs on KPFA live, on Sat. mornings with Laurie Campbell,as a 6 year old.

I am endorsed by Independents for Community Radio (ICR) - an affinity group of independent and diverse candidates url, www.indyradio2009.org. and by Joe Wanzala, current vice chair of the Pacifica National Board for 2009. Sincerely, Annie Hallatt.
