Staff Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
There was a time I was extremely frustrated with media, all forms of news and music media on radio and television. Then one day I tuned into KPFK, and a small seed already planted within me sprouted as if towards sunlight. I, like so many others, have turned to KPFK over the past fifty years, (sixty for KPFA listeners) for the community news, arts, music, education and humanities outreach media outlet that it is. KPFK's mission statement is a beautiful idea and many of us with conscious intellect and philosophical outlooks have turned to KPFK from the spark that exists within us. We are all the same in our respectful listener beginnings. I began volunteering with KPFK seven years ago, and the educational knowledge from that of the archives or the films and various other events were always rare gems I acquired during my volunteer times with KPFK...I used to joke, "will work for knowledge". Since then, I have seen bird's a like flock. Since being at KPFK, i have listened to knowledge from grandfathers such as John Henry Clarke, Malcolm X, Alan Watts, just to name a few... I respect KPFK for the historical, educational enrichment which it stands for.

Currently I work as a part time sound engineer/board operator at the radio station, at the moment I work the morning shift and have enjoyed my employment and experience thus far at KPFK, always inspired towards the mission statement.

I would like to run for the Local Station Board mainly for three reasons. For one, I would like the experience of working with a community board for a community radio station such as KPFK and would like to help with other progressive individuals to create a strong radio station that can match the strength of our signal. Secondly, I would like to offer an honest progressive ear and voice that represents conscious, intellectual listeners of great diversity. Finally, I would really like to see and participate in creating more outreach opportunities to expand our listener ship considering we have such a powerful radio signal. Let us maximize our potential with the inheritance of this great gift of power to influence and connect the communities, the masses. With such sad competition, KPFK could be a strong and powerful station; I would like to participate in that growth. KPFK is overcoming a hard haul, and with proper productive management as well as our personal dedication and involvement from the community, listeners, as well as staff, we can work together to create a successful station. Please read my questionnaire for more info. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely & Respectfully,

Nadia L. Richardson
Biography
1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?

I would like to offer an honest, progressive ear to the Local Station Board so that KPFK can run productively and efficiently. Also, I would like to represent the voice of the youth and create more opportunities for outreach.

2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?

I envision the Local Station Board working with KPFK in a positive, productive, efficient, and intelligent manner without any redundant rhetoric, working efficiently with local staff rather than counter productively.

3. How could the station better serve its listeners?

I think that KPFK as well as the LSB should work to create far more outreach opportunities to build our listeners. Also, better communication and organization amongst the LSB to work more productively, creates a more productive station for our listeners.

4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?

Having worked at KPFK as a sound engineer, I have had the opportunity to do some live remote broadcasts during the election period in which I developed a respect for the fact that KPFK, unlike other community media forms, has truly made an effort and achieved a status of truly reaching out to diverse cultures throughout Los Angeles as well as Long Beach with significant balance and lack of prejudice. I was very touched by this diverse voice expressed, and believe that KPFK works hard to adhere to its mission statement in this fashion. I do however feel that we do need to create more outreach opportunities to youth, which ranges from teenage high school students to community members in their fifties. I feel that we should set up more booths throughout listener radius to outreach and let people know that we exist. Perhaps have a dj available at the booth at various community events, and work with volunteer community banks such as LA Works as well as recruiting college students to have efficient volunteers help us at these booths and to solicit fliers and schedules/bumper stickers of our station for informative grassroots advertisement.

5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?

I feel that the LSB should also participate in fund raising ideas, opportunities, and events. We cannot solely rely on fund drive pledges, but need to create other revenues of fund raising from our listeners/supporters. Ideas include concerts in community parks, networking with local artists, students, poets, as well as activists at such functions. Also, more Pacifica Archvies outreach, to let people know of the gems we hold in our archives and market them in a modern manner for extra income revenue. I also feel we should do some local community advertising, such as with public transportation. Create more internet promotion. Set up booths at beaches during the summer and colleges/universities during school semesters. And brainstorm other possibilities for fund raising.

6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.

I have been a volunteer at KPFK for seven years and employed as a part time Board Operator/Sound Engineer for two years as well as Data Entry Clerk/ Fund Drive Temp for two years. This employment and volunteer experience has given me a solid view of KPFK and its mission. As well, working data entry has given me a solid understanding of our listener supporters and their commitment or lack to supporting us through fund drive pledge donations. I have hosted a few music/interview shows as a temp and such experience has created an in depth understanding of the amount of time and dedication it takes towards programming and producing a show. I am a Project Leader with LA Works, our Los Angeles community service organization for the greater Los Angeles [area] and have means to create volunteers to work with KPFK and its Outreach as well as an understanding of community development. I have also worked many production jobs from grass roots community events in Northern California such as Reggae on the River, Earth Dance, Kate Wolfe Music Festival, Oregon Country Music Fair, Bioneer's Conference, Green Festival, High Sierra, Sierra Nevada Music Festival, Los Angeles City College Music Concerts, etc., all this experience also has given me a greater understanding of community event planning and organization from the ground up as well as inspire such production. Currently, I am a student of Music and Recording Arts at Los Angeles City College and Los Angeles Valley College, studying to be a Professional/Certified Live /Studio Sound Engineer. In my youth I worked on the Pierce College Newspaper and a high school newspaper.

7. On which Local Station Board Committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?

I am not fully aware of all the committees, but I do plan to most definitely work with the Outreach Committee and search for a second committee to also sit on, perhaps one with fund raising.
