| Statement |
Greetings!
I am sista Tej Grewall. I am of Indian descent, born and raised in Southern California, and have also resided for some time in India and Jamaica. I grew up watching tourists from all over the world at my parents' retail stores in Newport Beach.
The Arts, Culture, Multi-Cultural, Globalism, Music, Color and Numbers are bell-ringing terms for me.
I earned my degrees from UCSB in both Art Studio and Global / International Studies (Emphasis in the Cultural Ideologies of South / East Asia)
I honor the Pacifica Mission Statement, will continue to excercise it and maintain its practice as a volunteer, ANY DAY. I read it the first day I came for the recent June Fund Drive, and believe that is what truly magnetized me to KPFK.
I am running for the election to become a member of the Local Station Board in order to be a voice and liason between especially the youth and the outreach programs being proposed, here at KPFK.
I am a creative Math Tutor and have experience with the youth.
I volunteer for the Outreach Committee and I am part of a collective at KPFK called: "People Without Borders", wherein I can be found in the Newsroom on Sunday afternoons.
I do this, because I know from my own experiences and injustices that the public, especially the youth, MUST NOT have their voices and cultures run over in times of meeting for solidarity in represntation for the Community at Board Meetings.

1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
I want to be on the LSB because I feel the board needs sensitivity to support its' current state of expertise, so that the mission statement is in function and youth and community news programs continue to use radio broadcasting for educational purposes.
2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?
I envision the LSB to work with the Pacifica Foundation and KPFK and the community under the same ethics we at KPFK are expected to, and that is under their very own mission statement.
3. How could the station better serve its listeners?
The station could better serve its' listeners by continuing to listen and follow the mission statement.
4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
The actions I would take are to join the various committees and to continue volunteering with different radio programs here at KPFK.
5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?
KPFK should solicit space for Artists in the community to show their work at KPFK, and also as an artist myself, I would (with some assistance from other artists) be willing to put on a show at an event and have proceeds from paintings go to KPFK and/or its programs.
6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
I speak English, Spanish, and can communicate in Punjabi (written also), and get by in Hindi. I am a math tutor, and have been a tutor and a painter. I also do healing/massage work on the body. I am a volunteer for the South Asian Network, and also here at KPFK. I work with Fernando Velasquez, Reza Pour, and Dedon Kamathi, and am an inspiring educator.
7. On which Local Station Board Committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?
I am interested in serving on the Outreach Committee and to support those that support the news and music programs that properly provide access to cultural information. |
