Jaime Cader: I was born and raised in San Francisco, California and I am presently a Contra Costa County resident. My parents immigrated to the Bay Area from El Salvador and I can speak, read and write Spanish. During the past eight years I have been attending meetings of the Concilio Latino in Richmond, CA. This is a progressive group and I have also participated in the Concilio's community events/actions. For several years up until 2008, I worked as a citizenship coordinator for the non-profit organization California Human Development. In this capacity I organized many events to assist individuals with their citizenship application process free of charge. More recently I have organized free immigration presentations where community members can ask questions and receive individual advice.
I was on the Contra Costa County Human Relations Commission for approximately five years ending in 2007. During this time we gave several awards out, including those to the Queer Youth Action Team (Pleasant HIll, CA) and to the Gay/Straight Alliance of San Ramon Valley High School. I also worked to get two resolutions passed by the commission: one to support same-sex marriage in California and the other to oppose a proposed federal amendment to the U.S. Constitution outlawing same-sex marriage.
I am presently working for the non-profit Asociación Hispana del Cáncer, an organization dedicated to providings services to Hispanic cancer patients and survivors. One of my job duties is to promote the free cancer screenings that are offered throughout Contra Costa County. I am a member of the Contra Costa County Historical Society and I have written several historical/cultural articles and contributed to the making of an award winning documentary (where I am the host) concerning immigration.
The above issues that I work on in the community are those that I am passionate about. In order for KPFA to be a successful radio station, the community must be given opportunities to present its concerns. For my part I will do my best to keep an open mind, -whenever a subject matter presents itself that I am not familiar with, I will hear the various viewpoints and do the research to arrive at an appropriate decision.
