| Statement |
Since 1959, it has been my good fortune to be a continual listener and financial supporter of KPFK. This station has been a big part of my life for 50 years! Now that my six children are grown and I am not working as a professional pianist, I can devote the time necessary to be a KPFK board member. Contributing my ideas to the needs of the station will be a serious priority in my life.
I am a black, blind, senior citizen who will work especially to expand these segments of our listenership.
I have some ideas which certainly can be discussed and could be brought up before the board should you elect me. I am dedicated to helping the station continue to grow in listenership and importance. I am in good health and appreciate what real news is -- KPFK is a source of news that can be obtained nowhere else. If you have the time, you may check out www.howlettsmith.com which will give you a profile of me.

| Biography |
1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
I have been a KPFK listener for fifty years and I want to give something back.
2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?
Although often, these groups do not naturally work together, it is time that the Board shows, by example, that the Pacifica mission is doable! Groups with very different agendas can reach consensus through peaceful and respectful dialogue. It is time to walk the walk!
3. How could the station better serve its listeners?
By placing more emphasis on heath: 9:00 a.m. is too soon to rebroadcast Amy Goodman's Democracy Now, instead pick up Garry Null's health programming for our Los Angeles audience. Amy Goodman can be rebroadcast during drive time. This maximizes the mileage KPFK can get out of both these great programs.
4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
I would increase the amount of programming devoted to classical music and real jazz.
5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?
Live concerts! Like the one I did in the 1960's on behalf of KPFK. Reintroducing community carnivals like the Renaissance Fair. Have Garry Null five days a week!
6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
I am a college grad, professional entertainer, I work for four churches which puts me in contact with many people, and I have an undying dedication to KPFK. See my profile at www.howlettsmith.com
7. On which Local Station Board Committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?
Finance and Programming
