Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
Candidate Statement

My name is Edgar Toledo and I am 15 year listener and volunteer with KPFK and I am running as a Listener Candidate.

My main reason for running for KPFK's Local Station Board is to help guide KPFK through these difficult financial times. My love for KPFK, combined with my 14 years of community radio and community radio fund-raising experience makes me an ideal candidate for the position.

First let me tell you a little about myself. I have been a listener and volunteer at KPFK for the past 15 years. At the same time I have also been a staff member of the Pacifica Radio Archives located on the second floor of KPFK. I started my relationship with KPFK as a volunteer with the KPFK News Department. My main function was to record community speakers, authors and activists for on-air broadcast.

In the late 1990'S I was able to put my radio skills to use by helping assist in establishing and running low power FM radio stations in East Los Angeles. I have always been active in the community and have at various times organized community based concerts and run a silk-screening co-op, Beyond Borders.

At the Pacifica Radio Archives I am currently working to establish relationships with university professors to include Pacifica Radio Archives audio, interviews and speeches as reference materials for their classroom curriculum. This partnership will help the Pacifica Radio Archives outreach the historic Pacifica Radio collection to a wider and younger audience, and help generate revenue each university semester.

As a member of the Local Station Board I will work to increase KPFK's presence in the community and help establish community relationships and partnerships to sponsor more speaker, educational, and cultural events. I would also like to see KPFK's News Department become a viable source for investigative news reports.

I have widespread support from the KPFK staff and many of the station's volunteers and programmers. I hope you will support me so I can put my skills to work for KPFK and Pacifica as a Local Advisory Board Member.

Thank you for your attention and time; and vote for Edgar Toledo for the KPFK local advisory board.

I would want to serve on the Local Station board to better serve, support and contribute to the welfare of the station.

2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?

I envision the Local Station Board working to represent the station and the community, serving the concerns of the listeners and staff, and to draft and offer concrete solutions on the various issues that affect the station to the Pacifica Foundation.

3. How could the station better serve its listeners?

One way the station could better serve the listeners is by mailing KPFK subscribers a feed back questionnaire regarding the quality and content of the programs that air on the station. If necessary the feedback could be used to make programming changes.

4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?

Some actions that I would take to increase KPFK's presence in underrepresented communities is to have KPFK sponsor more community events, especially during summer times when many events are free to communities or the general public, KPFK could be a media sponsor. Also, KPFK could be more involved with teachers and professors offering interships to KPFK's News Department.

5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?

For other sources of funding KPFK could solicit special specific grants that would allow for special community events, or creating a special outreach newsletter, or maybe re-introducing the apprenticeship program. Another way would be for KPFK to start hosting, or in collaboration with other organizations, special concerts twice a year or host a series of speakers.

6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.

My background skills and coomunity service experience that I can bring to the Pacifica Network include having help establish, recruit programmers and run community based low power FM radio in North East Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for four years. I have also organized small community benefit concerts and supervised volunteers for the past fourteen years. I am also currently employed with the Pacifica Radio Archives in which I have contributed to raise revenue for the network via station premium packs.
