Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
To Whom It Concerns
My long career in professional broadcasting in local markets such as San Diego, New York, and Los Angeles helped me develop appreciation for what listener supported radio can provide to a community.
Unlike corporate controlled media, a community based, listener supported KPFK can reach deep into the background of individual neighborhoods to give voice to its citizens.
As producer, investigative reporter, and news anchor in each of these markets, my over thirty year career in radio and television makes me uniquely qualified to help KPFK sound and be more professional and entertaining.
I do not envision KPFK to evolve in a mainstream “NPR” tone; in fact, what I believe the local station board needs is an activist member with a solid professional background.
My retirement from corporate broadcasting has given me the opportunity to expand my political views to a more radical degree. There simply is not enough diversity of opinion on such important topics as the 9/11 Truth issue and subsequent national and global security issues. Does even KPFK obfuscate or ignore some “hot potato” topics (such as the international “war on terrorism” as a pretext for global domination)?
My own background as an activist in other, various issues such as single payer healthcare , media reform, fair and transparent elections, is an asset to the local board and KPFK listener
As a listener of the programming on KPFK, it seems uncomfortably amateurish in its tone much of the time. Consistency and cohesion of programming is lacking, contributing to that “hanging by a thread” sound the station occasionally has.
A more professional, more probing tone could also serve to attract a wider funding base from loyal listeners who currently donate only to NPR.
I think I could help reach out to under represented listener bases because I stay involved in communities such as South Central Los Angeles and Venice, focusing on youth outreach programs for these citizens.
Funding for the station can be activated in these communities once KPFK tailors more of its programs to this maturing population, an emerging listener base in Southern California.
If the station hopes to become a force in social change in Los Angeles, it will require a dedicated, professional level of broadcasting in an ever more fragmented media environment such as internet radio. I have experience in internet radio in addition to my other career broadcast experience, so I am uniquely qualified to help KPFK grow in this area as well.
I would be most interested in serving on “programming content” committees and hosting the more highly controversial discussions on KPFK.
Please accept this candidate statement as a true and honest presentation of how I might serve the local station board.
Sincerely,
KPFK listener

Sinceramente,
Bree Walker
