Albert Solomon Candidate Statement

Mr. Albert Baron Solomon has not qualified as a candidate for WBAI Local Station Board.
Any votes for him will be skipped over to the benefit of the voter's next choice.
The Pacifica National Board has passed a resolution regarding this situation, and it is available for you to read here.

Edict on the statement of Mr. Albert Solomon

by National Elections Supervisor Casey Peters

The Candidate Packet issued to all persons who expressed an interest in running for any of the five Local Station Boards contained a checklist of nomination requirements and copies of Fair Campaign Provisions with guidelines on candidate statements. The checklist reads, in part: “In drafting your statement, you may begin with your name, include your experience, skills, and the main theme you want to emphasize in your opening paragraph, as this is all many voters may read.”

Pacifica Bylaws Article Four Section 2-B sets forth required documents that the nominee for Local Station Board shall submit. Point (3) requires: “a written statement of up to 500 words in length by the candidate introducing himself/herself and his/her interest in, or qualifications for, servings as a Delegate, which statement shall be distributed, or otherwise made available, to the Members entitled to vote along with the written ballot”.

When candidates submit statements which may be considered inappropriate, we need to look for compliance with the Bylaws.

Pacifica Election Supervisors are not an investigatory body, nor a court of law. We do not have the time and energy, the expertise, nor the legal authority to hold hearings and weigh evidence.

However, in the case of Albert Solomon, whose racially-charged entry has been deemed offensive by Pacifica activists nationwide, not only the spirit but the letter of the Bylaws was violated, in that his statement contained no information "introducing himself/herself and his/her interest in, or qualifications for, serving as a Delegate."

A precedent was set for such circumstances in 2003 at KPFK when Chris Condon and John Wenger were disqualified as candidates for not having submitted valid candidate statements in a timely manner. Therefore, Mr. Solomon has not qualified as a candidate for the WBAI Local Station Board.

Pacifica National Board resolution

Motion:  Discriminatory Delegate Candidate Statements        Moved by Acie Byrd, 2nd Lisa Davis

1.     The Pacifica National Board (PNB) declares that it is contrary to the Pacifica mission     and the Foundation's policy forbidding discrimination, and shall not be allowed, for any     Delegate candidate to use Pacifica resources to distribute discriminatory statements     on the basis of race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity,     ability/disability, or age, as part of any written or oral election-related statements.

2.     The PNB charges the Committee to Investigate Allegations of Racism and Sexism     with developing recommendations to the PNB for a mechanism to administer and     enforce the above-stated policy, and also supports the existing work of the Committee     to develop a plan for anti-racism training throughout the network.

3.     The PNB condemns the racist characterizations in the candidate statement of WBAI Delegate candidate Albert Solomon, who has since been disqualified, as discriminatory against people of African ancestry and contrary to the Pacifica mission.

4.    The PNB urges the National Election Supervisor to arrange that:

a)    an on-air statement noting Mr. Solomon's disqualification and summarizing this motion be aired on WBAI with the same frequency as the candidate carts;

b)     a mailing be sent to all WBAI members with the text of this motion and an explanatory note;

c)     the original candidate statement of Albert Solomon be restored to the Pacifica website so that all are clear on the offensiveness of his words, alongside the text of this motion; and

d)     the text of this motion be published prominently on the pacifica.org/elections webpage and on the webpage with the WBAI Listener Candidates.

STATEMENT SUBMITTED BY ALBERT SOLOMON:

The Secret History of the WBAI Local Station Board --by Albert Baron "I Got Rhythm, I Got Music, I Got Jism, Who Can Ask forAnything More?" Solomon, Camera Operator, PACVID1.com/page4.html. Tell me, Black Female Board member, that you didn't say Frank LeFever was melanin-deficient and then say it wasn't a disease but only a condition?  WellI'm not melanin-deficient, I have a melanin insufficiency!  Tell me you didn'tslug Mitchel Cohen on the arm during a committee meeting! Tell me, Another Black Female Board member, that you didn't kick CarolynBirden's bag and then tell her to get her bag off your foot?  And pick fightswith Patty Heffley and Steve Brown over nothing! Tell me, Black Listener Activist, that you didn't call Berthold Reimers aNiglet!  And that you didn't call Stephen Brown every epithet in the book! It's all on the videotape. Tell me, Unnamed Black Management staffer, that you didn't shout at IndraHardat, that you didn't overturn her agreement with Gary Null on his lawsuit, and that you didn't sign the receipt for Bernardo Palumbo's membership check!  And look at this stuff that I made on PACVID1.com about the Radio ReportCommittee, where an Unnamed Black Female Board member duped everybody and putthe first program on the air without telling even the Committee!  If that isn'tthe most unmitigated gall, especially since under Robert's Rules it is yourduty to abide by and even support the duly voted decisions of any committeeyou're on!  Look on Part 3 of the documentary ("GROS-LOUIS series")-- only 14minutes! The reason I say this is the Secret history of the LSB is that under Robert'sRules the Majority can prevent anything from being discussed.  Forever!  Boardmembers aren't allowed to say anything defamatory about other Board members, and so nothing gets into the record.  Should I become a Board member, even Iwill have to shut up about some of these things! This is the probable Resistance lineup:  Albert Baron Solomon, James Ross,Patty Heffley, Robert Gold, Bernardo Palumbo, Carla Cubit, Jennifer Jager, KenLaufer and Lee McClure. Above all, don't rank anyone from Justice and Unity at all!  This is a totallypolarized environment where under Choice Voting you will damage us and yourvoting power if you rank even one opponent.  Thank you. Pat Logan says, "You, the voters . . . can nurture WBAI by changing the balanceof power on the Local Board and its Committees, insuring that management willbe thoroughly evaluated and that balanced budgets, based on realisticassessments of station income and expenses, will be submitted to the NationalFinance Committee; you who can determine the kind of folks the LSB chooses torepresent us on the National Board which, among other things, hires Pacifica'sCEO, who, in turn, hires WBAI's General Manager." Hey, I'm a camera operator.  I'm a *camera operator!*  Look at this stuff! Look at this stuff that I made on PACVID1.com!!

fflefever: Lynch mob http://radioactivist.net
I do not mean to trivialize the horrific history of lynchings, but I want to object to the PNB accepting the same standard of "evidence" that a lynch mob does, and acting as it does in denying the accused any opportunity for defense:

"The PNB condemns the racist characterizations in the candidate statement of WBAI Delegate candidate Albert Solomon, who has since been disqualified, as discriminatory against people of African ancestry and contrary to the Pacifica mission."

You may agree with the PNB's interpretation; but if you do, you are doing so out of an immediate emotional response, in the absence of a full presentation of the evidence.

In a fair hearing, I believe it can be demonstrated that Albert was (1) illustrating the offensiveness of Justice & Unity language preceding this, in which opponents are routinely identified as "white", and that (2) Albert is known to white and black associates alike to be strongly opposed to racism.

It is outrageous that J&U operatives are given carte blanche (forgive the pun) to deflect every indictment of their incompetence by accusing critics of "racism", and to instigate racial animosity in Pacifica.

Case in point: Lisa Davis, Cerene Roberts, Nia Bediako, and Ayo Harrington finding (by formal vote) no problem with my being told (in an official listserve) that I had a "melanin deficiency" disease when I criticized the blatant incompetence of the Programming Committee chair.

Casey you didn't even put the paragraphs in my statement. It is a mess. Please fix it. If you want to defame me and cowtow to your J&U masters, at least do it with style!

tom: Dan Siegel is corrupt
WBAI is bankrupt. Dan Siegel of the Pacifica National Board is corrupt. He has been temporarily placed on the national board for one month to sabatoge the elections and allow the WBAI Justice and Unity corruption to continue.

I also was personally attacked in racial terms; standard J&U "defense" against criticism.

I had the temerity to criticize Nia Bediako (LSB delegate, chair of the Programming Committee, and wife of the J&U appointed LSB Treasurer) for her mishandling of the planning for an abortive "Town Hall" meeting. Ed Marshall (failed J&U candidate for LSB) posted a message attributing my criticism to my age and other characteristics ("inane OMF"), including my "melanin deficiency" disease. Lisa Davis, who interprets every criticism as racist even when race is not mentioned, voted against disapproving such EXPLICITLY racial attacks in the Programming Committee's official listserve.

Subsequently, in a patently discriminatory way, I was deprived of my voting membership in the committee.

I had been a member from the beginning, had seen initial progress (towards surveying the staff to ascertain their knowledge of procedures for initiating new programs and evaluating current programs) disrupted by what can only be described as mob tactics. After J&U achieved complete control, it spent the next couple of years doing nothing at all.

As a member of the Membership, Outreach, & Fundraising committee I have seen negligible fundraising and pathetic neglect of outreach and membership.

As a member of the management Evaluation Comittee, I have seen initial efforts to evaluate the General manager and the program Director disrupted, and the (bylaws mandated) annual evaluations shirked for the next 2 or 3 years. I saw the PD's personal assistant given control of an eventual sham evaluation of the PD [I can give details as to its shoddy methodology]; a process not yet formally reviewed by the complete LSB so far as I know.

As a member of the Finance Committee, I have seen stonewalling (management in collusion with J&U) when independent members asked who were the "consultants" that drove consultant expenditures far over what had been budgeted, and asked what they did for their money. Stonewalling when we asked what happened to the proceeds of a fundraiser at Riverside Church (J&U exists primarily to protect the man who diverted the funds to his own use). Stonewalling and derisive retorts when we asked to see explanations of specific budget lines in an effort to find alternatives to staff cuts. Their preference was to ignore continued deterioration of membership and listener support and to adopt absurdly inflated projections of IMPROVED listener support, year after year, in proposed budgets that this year even the national office and the PNB had to condemn. WBAI is bankrupt and our bills are being paid by other Pacifica stations.

I could cite a few more examples, but the basic facts are that (1) J&U exists to protect the status quo, (2) every criticism of them or of management is attributed to our being white (not true, as some of us are black) and their being black (not true, as some of their operatives are white), and (3)participants in any interpersonal or governmental exchange are routinely identified by race in J&U descriptions.

This tactic has had an impact on programming. Some WBAI producers take this model as an indication of what is acceptable, and many listeners have complained about what they perceive as a pervasive tone of anti-white and anti-semitic undercurrents (and sometimes explicit rhetoric). Some complain in public forums, others vote with their feet. I know. I have done my own outreach (tabling at various demonstrations, handing out home-made leaflets at marches, etc.) and I have met many FORMER members and FORMER listeners that way.

fflefever: Why? Here's why. http://www.friendsofwbai.org
Enough nonsense about Albert's clumsy parody of J&U standard language. He had hoped to shame J&U by identifying people the way they do.

Edwin Johnson, the mole from Texas asks, "Why use racist distinctions? Why do you refer to various people at WBAI by the color of their skin, and do so only to denigrate them?
You act like you are some type of superior white man. It is shameful."

Why don't you ask Lisa Davis and the other J&U operatives?

Ask them about _these_ racial identifications, typical of J&U's racially divisive attacks on those who criticize them or the Program Director they exist to protect (a few things are in print email etc. but many not online go unrecorded):

FROM SHEILA HAMNAKA c. Nov. 2005:
"...List Prog is predominantly white and they want to get rid of the predominantly Black management and staff at WBAI...they want to replace as much of the staff as possible with 'volunteers'. Volunteerism is easier for people of privilege, and could easily set the stage for takeover of the station
by white liberals..."

c. MARCH 2007:
"People of color, and white people who oppose racism DO NOT
= Steve Brown. Look at ACE's faces. Look twice. Then go to
www.justiceunity.org and look at the faces of Justice &
Unity. A picture is worth a thousand words."

LISA DAVIS:
Thursday, January 26, 2006 1:26 AM
"...the fact that she is White and I am Black makes this statement even more egregious..."

FRED NGUYEN JANUARY 2006:
"...A black woman had been named as the new ED (she was selected by the search Committee). As soon as it was announced, the PNB went into a secret executive session and emerged with a white man as their choice..."

SHEILA HAMANAKA:
Date: 15 February, 2006 23:26:34 EST
"Thanks to the racist gatekeepers in Pacifica, this year the
majority of the Pacifica National Board is white..."

From: sheila hamanaka
Date: Mar 8, 2006 8:05 PM
"...Heffley...is white...Lisa is African American. Imagine if this exchange had happened on the floor of the U.S. Congress, if a white Senator said that a Black Senator..."

Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2006 13:32:14 -0500
From: sheila hamanaka
"...she and her predominantly white supporters did the work Bush could not..."

LISA DAVIS:
"...When I came back home and went to my computer I found the
following very insulting message from Carolyn Birden, a White member of the LSB, who did not show up at the LSB meeting in Newark..."

LISA DAVIS:
"...in the three years I've been sitting on the Board I have
frequently witnessed White men and White women scream and argue at the LSB meetings...The LSB has even witnessed a White man publicly curse a woman out..."

Albert Baron Solomon: Shameless (and Foolish) (and Anonymous) Slander http://PACVID1.com/page5.html

This statement, dear anonymous Siegel/ Casey clone or whoever is writing this, is slanderous and viciously partisan. I have done nothing illegal-- as Nameless Siegel even admits! Only in the supercharched racebaiting atmosphere of Pacifica is it a crime to call a black person black. If Siegel and J&U have their way we won't even be able to call a spade a spade, we'll have to call it "a nonracial digging tool." We won't be able to open our mouth at all! Thus you and Siegel are trying to bias this crucial election and undermine any semblance of impartiality or constitutionally protected free speech. Shame on you!
