Margaret PrescodThe growth and protection of the precious resource of KPFK and Pacifica must always be front and center. All too often we tend to get stuck in our particular point of view without compassion and understanding towards each other. Independent voices are important where one is moved to act on principle not ambition and competitiveness, by what is right, by what will bring people together and move us forward in a good way, not to loyalty to particular individuals and/or a slate. Rather than encourage and allow others to grow and learn from mistakes (although one should not keep making the same mistakes) too much time has been spent tearing people down; hopefully that will now change. None of this negativity contributes to a healthy work environment or to practically getting out of the situation the powers that be want us in, a state of confusion and ineffectiveness. A commitment to finding concrete, practical solutions will do much to bring people together and increase the effectiveness of the LSB. My experience has been that the best way to cross differences and divides is to work together on something concrete that would benefit all staff and the entire station such as the LSB working to fund raise for KPFK quite apart from fund drives. If we are not doing practical and productive work together as an LSB, we tend to get stuck on differences on point of view, endless power struggles, etc resulting in undermining our effectiveness as well as the credibility of what I hope we are all trying to achieve. It would be good to focus on clear and productive solutions to problems, and be up front about what we stand for. As I said when I first ran for the Local Station Board, our planet is in jeopardy and, to stem that tide, we need the power of diverse communities and individuals whose aim is not personal power and who are determined to stay the course to undermine power relations among us that ensure divisions, war, poverty, environmental devastation, etc.
