Melinda Iley-Dohn Candidate Statement

This is an exciting time to be a part of Pacifica as a member of the KPFT LSB as we prepare for our fourth elections. We are growing and there are many needs in the area of outreach to get the Pacifica message out to a broader audience and grow in a rapidly advancing technological radio market.

I was fortunate to have been elected to the first democratically elected LSB at KPFT with a three year term. I served my term and took a year off to allow others to serve as well.

I have been a listener sponsor of Pacifica for about six years but I became involved with KPFT four years ago and have been fully involved since.

As a member of the board and volunteer, I have the following experience:

  • Chair KPFT Elections Committee
  • Member Pacifica National Board Elections Committee
  • Member of PNB Ad hoc and regular Archives Committee
  • Member of the PNB Ad hoc Executive Search Committee
  • Member KPFT Management Selection and Review Committee
  • Member of KPFT Outreach Committee
  • Member of KPFT Development Committee
  • IRV/STV vote counting for local KPFT elections and PNB Committees as needed

My goals as a returning member of the LSB would include wider efforts into the Harris County and surrounding area. I would also like to promote local archive efforts and our amazing national archives as well. I look forward to serving another term for your community sponsored radio station.

Regards,
Melinda Iley-Dohn

tilmaya: deeply concerned listener
I am deeply concerned about the increasing exclusion of "other" communities by KPFT's programming. Specifically, I was listening to Connect the Dot today (November 28, 2007) and the host made a racial slur against Asians (referring to KidCare as having been "Shanghai'd") right after talking about the racism that the black community faces from HPD. This statement is clearly derogatory and it is truly disappointing that the person answering the phone calls at KPFT during the show didn't bother to address my concern. I fear that KPFT is going down a path that is increasingly excluding persons outside of the black/African-American communities. What are your plans or vision to make KPFT more inclusive and balanced?
