the Candidates WBAI Listener Candidates Omowale Clay Candidate Statement Omowale Clay Candidate StatementI am seeking re-election to the Local Station Board with the WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign (www.justiceunity.org). I have been a human rights activist for most of my adult life, believing in the need for the Black community to aggressively build institutions and alliances that strengthen our struggle for human rights. I’ve been privileged to be a guest on various WBAI programs to get out the word. As a strong supporter of the station, I stood up against the infamous “Christmas Coup” in 2000 that tried to co-opt the station into corporate/mainstream politics. I spoke around the city to keep WBAI an independent voice against all forms of oppression, corruption, and racism. Now WBAI faces a different threat -- opposition board members who use vicious rumor-mongering and unsubstantiated charges of corruption and incompetence to chip away at the hard-won inclusion of strong Black community advocates in station management and programming. Justice & Unity and I will continue to stand steadfast against this. I've been a lifelong resident of Southeast Queens. I have a Master’s in Urban Planning. My professional life has been challenging, having worked 15 years in housing advocacy and 11 years at a major NYC hospital, first focusing on youth internships and now human resources. But my most rewarding experiences come from my commitment to empower the Black community in attaining all our human rights. I was a key organizer for U.S. Black participation in several international conferences: World Conference Against Racism (South Africa); United Nations Women's Conference (China); African Union (Ethiopia); and nationally, National Rally for Reparations (D.C.) I’ve worked to get justice for the murder of Sean Bell, an unarmed Black youth shot 50 times by police. I was an organizer of the September 11, 2007, Day of Outrage Against Police Terrorism, which targeted general police terror against the Black community, and, in particular, supported Evelyn and Michael Tarif Warren, two Black lawyers brutalized by the police. I’m a member of the December 12th Movement, Millions for Reparations, Black Men’s Movement Against Crack, and the “Put the Guns Down Campaign,” which seeks to stop the crisis of youth killings within the Black community. I support the Justice and Unity Campaign’s determined struggle for the soul of WBAI’s political and cultural future. The Pacifica Mission is a forward-looking vision meant to engage its radio stations in a continual struggle to evaluate their relevancy to the battles for justice, equality, and economic progress. Particularly in a time when war, intolerance, racism, and the crushing of civil liberties are on the agenda of a small yet powerful few, it's critical that WBAI not be misdirected. Therefore, I ask for your vote for me and all the other Justice and
Unity candidates (in this rank order after me): We resolve to defend the Pacifica Mission, the station, and the people that it serves. Trackback(0)

Oh sorry, I meant to give the link above. It is one of your esteemed colleages, Omowalle, as he appears at public comment at the October 31, 2007 meeting of the WBAI Local Station Board (5 minutes). His name is Ed Marshall. Nice! 1

Yeah the Justice and Unity are like the Boy Scouts: Everything upright and spiffy clean! That said, sorry I wasn't saying you were the best candidate, Omowalle. I was talking about Pat Logan! 2

You are the best candidate and you are *definitely* going to win! And you Little Lady, there is nothing to transmute the infighting except to *win* and that is just what the Independents are going to do. I have a bet on that we will win three seats for a solid 14-10 majority-- but this is no reason to let our guard down. These people are like Kamakazes-- you have to beat them down and trample them into the ground and still they get up and poison the earth with their venom. Love will find a way but not until Justice and Unity is *out* of the way!! Seriously though, if you have any more questions, ask us. Pat cannot read this board but any questions you have I or someone else will relay to her. We have a slate of excellent excellent people! Bernardo Palumbo is a renowned artist and community leader-- I have gone to concert sponsored by him and led by a woman drummer named Naranja and the music was Superb! Ken Laufer is probably the most persuasive of our candidates, gently urbane and also a professional pianist. He will also bring to the Station and to the Board an alternate view on medicine and AIDS. Carla Cubit combines organizing skills in the Squatter movement with talent as a singer and a sculptor. Don Mathisen is a professional broadcaster. It is an honor to have him on the Listener slate. I am very good at parliamentary procedure with professional training in sociology and statistics as well as 12 years of experience writing about governance reform in the journal of the Park Slope Food Co-Op. I would have been an excellent Board member if I had not been unfairly and arbitrarily hatcheted out of (disqualified from) the election. James ("Jamie") Ross is a magnificant fighter for justice and also highly skilled in budgeting and finances. He is on the Board now and we all need to put him back with an overwhelming landslide. And this is just a few of the candidates, one more excellent than the other! Best wishes-- and VENCEREMOS! albert 3

If elected, what actions could you reccommend to transmute the in-fighting and backstabbing that sends reasonable people running and corrodes the Foundation?

WBAI is bankrupt. Dan Siegel of the Pacifica National Board is corrupt. He has been temporarily placed on the national board for one month to sabotage the elections and allow the WBAI and Justice and Unity corruption to continue

I believe you have claimed that 6,000,000 programs were downloaded from the WBAI archives in the past year. Can you provide the source for this figure--WBAI's website seems to average about 30,000 visitors a month, so this 6 million downloads is hard to credit.
If there have been 6 million downloads in a period where paid membership in the station has sunk to less than 16,000, this represents a major shift in listenership from radio to internet. In light of the repeated failures of on-air drives to meet their goals, what suggestions do you have for a fundraising model that recognizes the growth in internet listeners? 6

The station needs to be saved as our voice against fascism, airing the thought, art, music, resistance of the progressive communities. These Just-Us cutthroats and race-baiters like Lisa Davis are doing the Bush administration's work in destroying this critical resource.
