Sara Flounders Candidate Statement

Having served for the last three years on the Local Station Board (LSB), I seriously appreciate the long-term, day-to-day struggle to keep WBAI a resource for communities and movements that are under attack.

Because WBAI is such a vital resource, it’s hardly surprising that there are continuing efforts to undermine the Pacifica Mission by a grouping trying to take the station in a wholly different direction. This group organizes smear, fear, and slander campaigns to sow divisions and discourage activists from donating or volunteering at the station.

I’m proud to be part of the WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign slate (www.justiceunity.org), which has been endorsed by Larry Hamm, ACT UP, and many other activists and progressive organizations. I share their strong commitment to keeping WBAI connected to communities of color and grassroots movements for progressive action. I urge you to vote for me and all eight of our candidates:
Omowale Clay
Tibby Brooks
Lisa Davis
Marianela Tricoche
Marian Borenstein
Wellington Echegaray
Bok-keem Nyerere

I’ve helped obtain station premiums at low cost and, working with other Justice & Unity members, have raised thousands of dollars to keep WBAI on the air. I’ll continue to work cooperatively with management and staff, rather than harass, attack, and undermine their work as the opposition does. Commitment to both unity and diversity based on race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, and disability is essential for the station staff, the LSB, and its committees.

I bring to the board 40 years of experience and consistency in many movements against racism, war, political repression, and attacks on immigrants. I also bring my enthusiasm and deep optimism that people’s movements are the only force capable of making historic and fundamental change.

I am a long-time resident of Jersey City and I’m politically active locally, in New Jersey, in NYC, and nationally.

I’ve called into WBAI from the rubble of U.S. and Israeli targets in Beirut, Jenin, Yugoslavia, Sudan, and Iraq. I’ve been an organizer of major rallies against the war on Iraq. I’ve worked actively in defense of many political prisoners, especially Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier, and now the Jena 6. I’ve been a consistent activist on issues of affirmative action and reparations.

As co-director of the International Action Center for 15 years, I’ve gained invaluable experience in mass mobilizations, working collaboratively in pressured situations, organizing education and research, volunteer recruitment, and working with incredibly tight budgets. I’m well aware of the stresses that places on organizations. All these skills will continue to be helpful on the LSB.

WBAI is the only radio station in the area that has consistently given honest and thorough coverage to political crises as they unfold. It’s essential that we increase the slim anti-racist Justice and Unity majority on the board to continue working cooperatively with management, staff, listeners, and all our vibrant communities. It’s vital that we strengthen and improve our station, not tear it down.

If elected, what actions could you reccommend to transmute the in-fighting and backstabbing that sends reasonable people running and corrodes the Foundation?

WBAI is bankrupt. Dan Siegel of the Pacifica National Board is corrupt. He has been temporarily placed on the national board for one month to sabotage the elections and allow the WBAI and Justice and Unity corruption to continue

fflefever: cameo appearances http://www.friendsofwbai.org
I have seen Sara make a cameo experience once or twice in LSB committee meetings, vote as required by Cerene or Bob, then quickly leave.

So far as I know, she has never done any substantive work on any LSB committee. And certainly not on the LSB itself, which has a mandate (from the feudal chief J&U is organized to protect) to do nothing at all. Contrary to what Sara so outrageously said in the on-air candidate forum, examining management's performance is not just some sneaky thing independent LSB delegates want to do--annual evaluations of management are MANDATED by the Pacifica ByLaws.

J&U squelched initial attempts to evaluate management by disrupting committee meetings. When it achieved control, it simply refused to evaluate management. I know, because I served on the Management Evaluation Committee all through this period.

Eventually, after a couple of years, it cooked up a scheme that put control of the process in the hands of the Program Director's personal assistant, did not interview those working most closely with the PD (Department heads), and would not let even LSB members see responses from a staff survey.

Who did see them? Ayo Harrington (the PD's assistant, not on the LSB), who kept the returns in her apartment, and her radio co-host (Eddie Ellis, also not on the LSB).

Tell me, Sara--to this day, has the full LSB discussed and voted on the evaluation"summary" prepared by Eddie Ellis?

Why is this important? Because programming is what brings listeners in and persuades them to become members. We have a Program Director who thinks only high-priced premiums will do the trick, not better programming.

It's not working. We have lost members year by year for several years. J&U operatives are so desperate to conceal this that they have resorted to the Big Lie, declaring (on air) that membership is up, not down, and asserting the absurd figure of "28,000 members" and "28,000 ballots being mailed out". Is it dishonesty or just incompetence and avoidance of hard work that lets Sara and Lisa and Omowale somehow miss the well-documented fact that actual membership is scarcely more than half that? (a little over 15,000)

One thing Sara has accomplished. She has gotten the nose of the camel under the tent. Which camel is that? The political fringe-party that competes with coalitions of anti-war groups and tries to steal the spotlight from them. One has to wonder what the price will be for J&U's enlisting her support in their WBAI take-over.

WBAI is bankrupt. These elections should be cancelled and redone due to the censorship of the candidates that is taking place.
