Questionnaire Replies WBAI Listener Candidates Question Eight Question Eight: What can be done to preserve and share the treasures of the Pacifica Archives? You can find all of the listener candidate's answers to Question Eight on this page.
WBAI Listener-Sponsor candidatesMarian BorensteinThese tapes are indeed priceless pieces of U.S. progressive policy and cultural history. I would suggest that the 5 Local Station Boards and the Pacifica National Board put out a broad call to find additional democracy-oriented foundations and cooperating university sponsors that could assist Pacifica in both its technical and its economic needs regarding the archives.

Tibby BrooksThe Pacifica Archives is an astounding jewel of the progressive Movement, both here and abroad. As with cinema, tape deteriorates over time, and a major project is to digitize our unique tapes; this is a huge undertaking, and much work is still to be done. Fundraisers have been held to finance this project. The financial upside to the Archives is that so many of these programs make for irresistible premiums.
Omowale ClayThe Pacifica Archives contains thousands of programs, to say the least, that have been done throughout Pacifica's history. It is a cultural goldmine that contains a vast history of recordings of people and events that shaped the civil rights and progressive movements. All the local boards can support having more special fundraisers – on and off air – to preserve those treasures.
Carla CubitLive streaming radio archives and CD duplication can help preserve the treasures of the Pacifica Archives.
Lisa DavisThe archives are truly a treasure. They are invaluable. One of the things that must be done to ensure that the archives are preserved is making sure that all of our old tapes are digitized. And we must make sure that this is also done for each of the local stations. But we also need to make sure that the public understands that these archives are available. Museums and educational institutions must be aware of what we have. I know that the Archives Director, Brian DeShazor, is constantly doing outreach work around the Archives, and the local and national boards can do more to help with that outreach.
Wellington EchegarayThis is a problem that mainly requires money, since the archives which are on tape need to be preserved. There should be continued fundraising for digitizing the archives, and we should be promoting the material in the archives as much as possible.
Sara FloundersThe national archive contains many historical treasures, as Pacifica has always been engaged in this country’s social justice movements.
Robert M. GoldThe Pacifica Archives are the single greatest resource of Pacifica. I believe that they can be a great financial resource to the network with a greater marketing campaign.
Seth GoldbergOur current efforts are good enough for right now. We have bigger problems today and in the near term.
Jennifer JagerCatalogue them and try to market or donate material to various interested institutions
Kenneth LauferFinding more listeners, leading to more revenues. Then a small advertising campaign.
Pat LoganThe question was recently asked (and I'm paraphrasing): should the Pacifica Archive be a library or should it be a bookstore? In order to achieve its maximum potential, why can't it be both? I suggest that a certain amount of material be free to individuals while institutions, such as University libraries could be approached and be asked to purchase material. A sliding scale could be instituted such as exists in the Affiliates program. If organizations have the capacity to provide us with needed services, such as band width or publicity expertise, these could be accepted in lieu of cash. In this way PRA could gain income, assistance and a wider audience of individuals interested in learning and research.

Lee McClure-ComeA wider audience can be found by making sure diversity is enhanced in programming.
Stefan S. NeustadterIt is important that WBAI raise the money to properly preserve this heritage. One key to raising money is to share these archive with the listening public, sell copies (My wife and I have our share) and thereby establish a fund raising base.
Bok-keem NyerereThere are already one-day fundraisers for the Pacifica Archives, but having 2-3 day on-air fundraisers, playing historical recordings that are pertinent to present day situations, would give the Pacifica Archives more exposure, so that the listener is enticed by the relevancy of the recording being heard and more money can be raised at the same time that consciousness is being raised about the value of the Pacifica Archives.

James RossThe Pacifica Archives (not to be confused with WBAI's online audio archives) is a unique repository of history. We need grant money to preserve the old tapes, because the stations clearly can't provide enough.
Marianella TriocheThe material stored in the Pacifica Archives is priceless. It is a historical record of events and people who shaped the various progressive movements here in the United States and worldwide. The mainstream media ignored many of these people and these events. This gives these records added importance. It is imperative that the Pacifica Archives be preserved. Local stations have done many on-air fundraisers to raise money for the Archives. I propose that as material in the archives becomes digitized, copies of the material should be offered to the public in return for donations by using the different local programs to advertise the content of these offerings.
