Questionnaire Replies WBAI Listener Candidates Question Fourteen Question Fourteen: How can our station better serve under-represented communities? You can find all of the listener candidate's answers to Question Fourteen on this page.
WBAI Listener-Sponsor candidatesMarian BorensteinI would like to see more Local Station Board meetings and town hall meetings in neighborhoods of underrepresented communities, which should be well-publicized. This is particularly true for the various immigrant communities and other working class communities that are under attack. It was a great loss when the station laid off the Outreach Coordinator, Bok-keem Nyerere (who is also running this year with the Justice and Unity Campaign), who did good outreach to many communities. We need to recruit volunteers to work with the board’s Outreach Committee on this type of promotion and dialogue with these communities.

Tibby BrooksI would like to be part of more Local Station Board and town hall meetings in neighborhoods of underrepresented communities, and publicize these meetings in their local newspapers (in which we should advertise our programs, as well). Bok-keem Nyerere, who is running with me as a Justice and Unity Campaign candidate, did just this type of outreach as the WBAI Outreach Coordinator until he was unfortunately laid off. I look forward to working on outreach with Bok-keem.
Omowale ClayThrough well-thought-out marketing campaigns that put the station into communities that do not have a radio voice understanding and expressing their concerns. In addition, we can continue to invite various members from these communities to sit on our Community Advisory Board.
Carla CubitI believe Pacifica serves under represented communities well. It could broadcast live on site programming from under-represented neighborhoods and host under-represented groups and organizations on its programs.
Lisa DavisOur station can better serve underrepresented communities by literally going to where they live. I view the Local Station Board as much more than a governance body. The more engaged that the Local Station Board is with the community, the more it can put a face on WBAI. The LSB can be a conduit for the community and the station. I also think that representatives of the station should read the local newspapers, the circulars and the weeklies that many communities produce.
Wellington EchegarayThe station can serve underrepresented communities better by reaching out to them and going to them to ask their opinions about what issues concern them. There should be town hall meetings in different areas, and station representatives should attend community meetings and events and try to get articles in newspapers aimed at particular populations. These are activities that I would like to participate in as a board member.
Sara FloundersThe more coverage there is of the issues that concern the most oppressed and under represented communities, the more these communities will tune in to WBAI and support it. This is how WBAI has survived for decades in the city that is the center of finance capital and corporate power globally. We already have far more and often the only programming for many communities and issues, but our strongest point can always be further improved.
Robert M. GoldConsidering that we have a large Asian and Southeast Asian population in this city, we should explore programming aimed at this population.
Seth GoldbergBy continuing to exist.
Jennifer JagerIn this era of corporate media domination all communities are under-represented. WBAI must alert and inform anyone that we can get to listen. It is our duty to stay strong so that we can continue to speak truth to power. The programming must be diverse and inclusive.
Kenneth LauferThe station is doing quite fine representing different communities. Better finances will help here too.

Lee McClure-ComeQuestionnaires for suggestions should be sent to members. On-air appeals for suggestions should be made to give more voice to the under-represented communities.
Stefan S. NeustadterSponsor events in the communities we serve to raise awareness, offer participation and raise money.
Bok-keem NyerereOnce underrepresented groups have been identified, the station’s programming grid should be evaluated to find out where the shortcomings are with regard to serving those communities. Once again, the key word is “outreach.”

James RossBetter programming!! The station serves its listenership, both actual and potential, by providing the best programming possible. To better serve specific under-represented communities, under-representation needs to be assessed, and specific outreach done towards members of communities under-represented on WBAI. I strongly believe that shows aimed a specific community need to have some appeal for the wider audience. Several of the "community" shows on WBAI meet this standard, which is a good thing.
Marianella TriocheWe should try to establish dialogue with communities that are under-represented, by holding meetings with their members and leadership. We should incorporate some of their members into activities at the station and into helping the local board members with some of their tasks. We should also try to become better informed about the workings and problems of these communities. Trackback(0)
