WBAI Listener-Sponsor candidates

Marian Borenstein

I believe that I am able to bring to the board and WBAI many years of experience and activities in support of organizations and communities in both my professional life as an educator and administrator, and in assisting communities in their struggles to achieve social justice and economic equity within our society. In particular, I have been involved in various capacities with the struggle to preserve WBAI and Pacifica for three decades, including attending several National Board meetings in several cities as a Local Advisory Board member.I

have advanced degrees in early childhood and elementary education and a doctoral course of study in urban education. I also possess certification in supervision and administration in early childhood and elementary education. My work history includes roles as a teacher, educational and administrative director, agency director, school district consultant, project director and most recently as a member of a program development and policy formulation unit in the City’s Agency for Children’s Services. My college teaching experience includes the CUNY system, the Research Foundation, Antioch College and Bank St. College of Education. I have worked with school complexes as a consultant in Philadelphia, PA, Wilmington, DE, and Tuskegee, AL, as well as school districts in New York City. In my work with the City, I have been a shop steward, union delegate and union negotiating representative.

Other skills, interests, and areas of expertise include politics and local, national and international affairs. My organizational skills and experiences include organizing and coordinating a NYC school district’s early and elementary school components into a cohesive educational entity and the development of a plan to address issues of school improvement according to U.S. federal grant outlines and requirements. Most recently I have presented workshops and acted as a facilitator on various aspects of child development for a number of educational organizations. When I was an organization’s treasurer, I oversaw and accounted for receipts and expenditures from fundraising and grants and participated in planning for the financial needs of the organization to insure continuity of activities and service.

Rolando Bini

I am an immigrant, so I am aware of the plight of the immigrant community, especially after 911. I speak fluent Spanish and Italian. I am a vegetarian and a naturist for the last 35 years. I went to City College in the 70's studying Electrical Engineering and was an active member of the evening Student Senate. I also have a Bachelor degree as a Social Worker. At present I am the Executive Director of Parents in Action for Leadership and Human Rights, an organization that helps Parents fight system abuse in Foster Care and in Public Schools. We help individual cases as well as actively advocate for system change. I have and still active in any organization where I think I can help to bring social change, among them the National Action Network, the US Social Forum, Independent Commission on Public Education, Citizens Commission on Human Rights, Fordham University Interdisciplinary Task Force on Child Welfare, SEQNN, Queens Borough President Task Force on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse, Queens Borough President Education Council, Rights of Imprisoned People with Psychiatric Disabilities, Campaign to End the Death Penalty, the Libertarian Party, etc.

I am raising a 15 year boy as a single father. He is a vegetarian from birth and I am homeschooling him since I consider that at present Public School in NYC, not only does not educate our Children, but place them at great risk. My son has not been vaccinated, since I consider that vaccines cause many diseases and provide no benefit, except to the Drug Cartel. Thanks to those measures my son is very healthy and never has had the need of using a doctor. At present he is a black belt in Taekwondo. He has traveled to India twice by himself. I am very proud of him.

Tibby Brooks - As an activist for many years, I take my commitments very seriously. In the year that I have been on the Board, I have learned that loyalty to WBAI consists in striving to build it up, not only quantitatively (via listeners and money) but qualitatively, by engendering confidence in an institution that is a reflection of the communities it serves and by fostering the enthusiasm to focus on what we can do better. My particular set of skills consists of an unusual combination of talents: I am attentive to detail while keeping the bigger picture in view. Thus, I am both Secretary of the Board, continuously listening and writing, and an active participant in fundraising and outreach. My life and Movement experiences have sensitized me to assess a situation by how it will impact both my class and people of color, who are in the forefront of my class. Because of my activism, I am able to appeal to folks in many Movements to actually join WBAI.

Omowale Clay

I have over thirty years of organizing experience in the local, national and international struggles for human rights in Black communities. I have developed expertise in communication skills and I am responsible for creating slogans like "No Justice, No Peace," "Whose Streets? Our Streets," "Africa Called, Cuba Answered," all of which came out of the grassroots struggles against illegal drugs, racist attacks and for international solidarity. I am a member of the December 12th Movement, Millions for Reparations and the Black Men’s Movement Against Crack and the community-based “Put the Guns Down” campaign.

I was a key organizer for U.S. Black participation in several international conferences: World Conference Against Racism, Durban, South Africa; United Nations Women's Conference, China; African Union, Ethiopia, and nationally, the first National Rally for Reparations, Wash., D.C. I worked to get justice for the murder of Sean Bell, a unarmed Black youth, shot fifty times by the police. I also helped organize a Day of Outrage against Police Terrorism on September 11, 2007 which sought to target the general police terror perpetrated against the Black community and in particular support for Evelyn and Michael Tarif Warren, two Black lawyers brutalized by the police.

Professionally, I have over fifteen years of work in housing - from tenant organizing to low-income co-op management. I have spent the last eleven years working in the area of health care at a major NYC hospital - focusing first on high school and college internships for youth, and now Director of Human Resources. I majored in Political Science on the undergraduate level and Urban Planning at the graduate level.

Lisa Davis

I am an excellent listener and I respect the rules of decorum. Whereas I am not afraid to challenge unfair rules/rulings, I understand that there are processes put in place to try to help ensure that matters proceed in an orderly fashion. I have empathy and compassion for what the listeners experience. I have strength of character and I take my commitments seriously. I also have a strong background in office systems, which is helpful with the administrative aspect of the Board work.

Wellington Echegaray - Over the years, I have had the opportunity to organize around various social and political issues. I’m a peaceful person, a good listener and organizer, and love working cooperatively in groups. I’m active in the community, and in my 30 years of serving the community, I have learned how to listen to people’s needs, organize short- and long-term goals, and empower our community. In particular, my experience as chair of the Centro de Educación de Trabajadores (Workers’ Education Center, CET), which serves many types of people, has given me very good skills in working with diverse groups of people in a respectful way. In addition, my experience as an immigrant from Latin America, a worker and a union member has given me a strong perspective on the issues and needs facing the many people in our area who are in those categories. For many years, I have taught Spanish as a second language, as well as electricity and math. Since 1982, I've worked as an electrician for various contractors and have been a member of IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers), Local 3.

Sara Flounders

As co-director of the International Action Center for 15 years, in work in many defense committees and solidarity delegations, I’ve gained invaluable experience in mass mobilizations, in working collaboratively in pressured situations, in organizing education and research, volunteer recruitment, and working with incredibly tight budgets. I’m well aware of the stresses and strains that places on an organization. All of these skills will continue to be helpful on the LSB.

Kenneth Laufer

I'm a listener since the 60s. I have almost a perfect attendance record as an audience member at the LSB meetings and would definitely be on time for all meetings. Votes have been lost because not enough minority-side members were present. My outside job is a teacher for severely developmentally handicapped High School children, and I am very patient and tactful. This would help in trying to negociate with and compromise with any opposing sides on the LSB. I'm nationally known as a composer of humorous music. A sense of humor is needed on the LSB!

Pat Logan

I will bring to the Board well developed listening skills and the ability to remain calm during stressful situations. Having listened to the station since 1966 and having been active, though not a leader, during the 1977 crisis and during the formative stages--precoup--of our present problems I have a long term perspective which I have no doubt will be valuable. Shouldn't we try to revive what was best about WBAI during its various periods and learn what we can from past mistakes? I bring a strong compulsion to convince others to open themselves to experience the unique power and wonder of learning from and being mesmerized by audio material, whether it be dramas or documentaries.
