I have prepared this year end summary to provide members with a month by month look at some activities the station has been involved in for 2006. This is by no means a list of everything WPFW has done this past year but it will help members of the PNB get a sense of what the station has done in 2006. Financially, WPFW generated 1,720,161.00 in total revenue in fiscal 06 and our pledge fulfillment rate exceeded 80% for the year. PNB Meeting - Jan 2007 - WBAI Report
Administrative/FiscalFirst of all, welcome to the first of what should be a series of progressively positive reports outlining the slow yet steady growth of what I think is New York’s premiere broadcast outlet, WBAI. Currently it appears that we’re unaware of our superiority, but it’s all about realization then application will follow. My friends, we are currently in the realization phase. PNB Meeting - Jan 2007 - KPFT Report
AdministrationKPFT enters the second quarter of FY07 in relatively good shape. The FY07 budget for listener support calls for $1.245 million and current totals show over $351K income as of December 31, roughly 27% of the annual goal. Organizational Overview Administration Programming Operations PNB Meeting - Jan 2007 - Executive Director Report
CONTENTS Overview Since the Pacifica National Board meeting held in September 2006, two significant hiring decisions have been made: an Interim General Manager for WBAI and a Network Programming Coordinator. The expectations are that a new General Manager can implement a needed recovery plan and overcome political stalemate at the network’s New York station, while a coordinator for national programming, guided by the National Programming Policy adopted in October, can promote effective collaboration in developing special broadcasts, programs and segments produced locally for wider distribution, and fresh, engaging national programs. PNB Meeting - Jan 2007 - Pacifica Operations Report
As we start a new year, and welcome a new PNB, the Pacifica National Operations staff has prepared this document as both an overview of our work, and a series of technical recommendations and considerations for the board and the Pacifica managers. This report is broken down into 3 main parts: Radio; Internet/IT; Training and Documentation. Both Jon Almeleh and Pete Korakis prepared this report. PNB Meeting - Jan 2007 - Pacifica Radio Archives Report
Submitted to Greg Guma, Executive Director
Overall SummaryIn the first quarter of FY2007 the Pacifica Radio Archives (PRA) gained national and international news with its promotion of its November 28, 29 fund drive broadcast, ($266K in pledges), and testimony before the National Recorded Sound Preservation Board of the Library of Congress. These coinciding events brought awareness of the Archives and the Pacifica Foundation to larger and more expansive audience than previously achieved. The following are remarks delivered to the PNB by Executive Director Greg Guma: I’d like to begin by asking you to use your imaginations and envision the Pacifica radio network a few years from now. Start by imagining an audio production center with multiple channels and schedules open to frequent change, a place that breaks down distinctions between listeners and producers, a hothouse for the cultivation of talent and a laboratory for new ideas, a place where people converge, contribute – and then move on, a center for the development of informative, educational and entertaining programs with community partners and like-minded organizations. Remarks [to PNB] by Greg Guma, Executive Director
Shortly after I accepted this job, I talked with a dedicated Pacifica supporter who at one time also considered going after this position. From what I knew, this person seemed well suited for the job. So, why didn't you apply? I asked. The reply was revealing. "Well, I wanted to work again," I was told. The basic point, I think, was that it's tough to work in such a highly charged environment - whether you are a general manager, a program director, or sometimes even a board member - without making enemies and finding yourself under attack at some point. Pacifica Radio Appoints Indra Hardat Interim Manager of WBAI 99.5 FM
Ms. Hardat has served as the station's business manager for the last seven years. She replaces outgoing General Manager Don Rojas. She will serve as the interim manager while the station's Local Station Board conducts a search for a new leader. Statement From the Interim Pacifica National Board7/16/02 On Tuesday, July 16, 2002 the Interim Pacifica National Board met to discuss issues related to the contract with Democracy Now! Because we were going to be discussing matters which involved potential litigation and contractual negotiations, this meeting was convened in executive session. Eleven members of the Interim Pacifica National Board (IPNB) participated in the conference call/meeting: Teresa Allen, George Barnstone, Pete Bramson, Janice K. Bryant, Leslie Cagan, James Ferguson, David Fertig, Ray Laforest, Rob Robinson, Carol Spooner, Jabari Zakiya. Pacifica?s Executive Director Dan Coughlin and Deputy Executive Director Verna Avery-Brown were also on the call. Executive Director?s Report to the Interim Pacifica National BoardBerkeley, California As you all know, the new Pacifica Board and executive leadership inherited a financial and administrative nightmare in January of this year. The network had been looted and left rudderless. Stations did not even have funds to buy a paper clip let alone a pair of headphones and critical services like telephones and postage were being cut off. Pacifica?s transmitters were under threat, including KPFK?s historic tower on the top of Mt. Wilson. With no chief financial officer or controller, and chaos reigning in the national office, the network was on the verge of financial collapse. An independent financial review published in February reported that Pacifica faced a 2002 calendar year budget gap of $1.5 million and a deficit of $4.8 million. Some stations were facing serious working capital deficits. WBAI was looking at a hole of $350,000 and KPFK $250,000. With only $11 million in annual revenue, these debts posed a serious threat to the organization?s survival. Bankruptcy was openly being contemplated. Record Fund Drives Continue at Pacifica RadioListeners Rally at Non-Profit Broadcaster?s Stations WASHINGTON, DC (Jun. 12) ? Pacifica Radio Acting Executive Director Report to the Interim Pacifica National BoardMarch 8, 2002 The priorities of the Pacifica national office - in addition to the day-to-day management of network operations -- have been to: 1) Get a clear handle on the network's financial situation and to stabilize economically. 2) Begin the healing and rebuilding process in each of the five signal areas as mandated by the December legal settlement and recent board resolutions. This includes the urgent need for reconciliation between Local Advisory Board's and local stations in the run-up to LAB elections and by-law changes. |
