The Pacifica Foundation is a non-profit agency providing educational services. Its mission is to establish a foundation organized and operated exclusively for education purposes no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any member of the Foundation. Corporation services are provided in Berkeley/North Hollywood, CA, Washington, D.C., Houston, TX and New York, NY.

 

DEFINITION:

The Radio Consultant will work under the supervision of the Pacifica Affiliates Coordinator. The Radio Consultant will help with the work of the Radio For People Campaign, which involves outreach and support to communities in the Southern United States where there is potential for creating for NCE radio licenses during the upcoming FCC application window during the week of October 12 – 19, 2007.

The Radio Consultant will reach out to and provide support services to approximately 10 – 20 nonprofit organizations in cooperation with to the Pacifica Affiliates Coordinator and other organizers of the Radio For People Campaign. The Radio Consultant will assist with providing introductory and follow-up information and work with nonprofit organizations through out the decision making and application process. Experience with and thorough knowledge of how to apply for a radio license and how to build a radio station are preferred for employment in this position. The radio consultant will work directly with community members, boards and staff of nonprofit organizations, and organizers in the Radio for People Campaign, providing courteous, helpful and professional assistance. Payment: $ 2,000.00. Two months employment guaranteed, job may continue longer, depending on funding availability.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work with Pacifica Affiliates Coordinator and organizations applying for radio licenses including keeping records of applicants and reporting on their progress
  2. Interface and communicate with potential applicants and other people involved with Radio or People as outreach efforts require
  3. Promote Pacifica and Radio For People Campaign, outreach, and the various aspects of organizing strategies and plans.
  4. Do daily organizing via phone and traveling to certain communities through the Southern United States to meet with applicants, their Boards of Directors, and other relevant community members
  5. Assist in the preparation and research and outreach materials and assist with sending information to applicants
  6. Provide potential applicants with all information needed to make informed decisions and assist with decision making if needed
  7. Provide applicants with all information to follow through with applications including references for lawyers, engineers and all needed support information such as sample budgets, business plans, fundraising strategies, templates for radio station building, and strategies for successful applications.
  8. Provide necessary technical information including tower locations
  9. Monitor FCC web site updates regarding application situation and alerting applications about necessary changes.
  10. Attend meetings and conference calls of the Radio For People Campaign
  11. Other administrative duties as assigned as needed for successful NCE radio application.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
BA or AA preferred.

Experience:
Minimum 3-years experience working in application process and building a radio station. Knowledge of the process for applying for an NCE radio license and ability to train others in this area

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to provide station-building support to the applicants and assist with Radio For People Campaign. Basic computer and administrative skills, knowledge of NCE radio license application process and radio building process and of nonprofit organizations. Ability to keep accurate records, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a demanding atmosphere. Ability and willingness to travel. Good interpersonal skills and understanding of cultural life of Southern communities. Must be able to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate verbally by phone in a clear and concise manner. Demonstrates interest and willingness to learn more about community media and media activism. Ability to think clearly and manage multiple changing priorities, and remain pleasant and positive. Requires critical thinking and ability to support people with a variety of challenges. Requires good judgment.
